Study Tips From Someone Who Passed With Distinction

I sat the WSET Level 2 exam at the Napa Valley Wine Academy and came out with a Distinction. Here’s what actually worked for me — and what I’d tell anyone starting their WSET journey.

Master the grape variety profiles before anything else. The bulk of the Level 2 exam tests whether you know the characteristics of the key grape varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah/Shiraz, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Grigio. For each one, you need to know: primary flavors, typical body, acidity, and tannin levels, the key regions where it grows, and how winemaking style varies by region. If you can nail those, you’ve covered a huge chunk of the exam.

Learn the label logic, not just the rules. Questions about wine labeling — what terms mean, what’s required by law, how New World and European labeling differ — come up repeatedly. Rather than memorizing rules, understand the logic: Old World labels by region (because the region implies the grape), New World labels by grape (because the region is less prescriptive). Once that clicks, the labeling questions get a lot easier.

Practice food and wine pairing as a principle, not a list. The exam doesn’t just ask “what wine goes with fish?” It tests whether you understand why certain pairings work — how high acidity cuts through fat, how tannins interact with protein, how sweetness balances spice. Learn the underlying principles and you can work out any pairing question from first principles.

Do timed practice runs. You have 60 minutes for 50 questions at Level 2. Most people finish in 35–40 minutes — there’s no time pressure issue if you’re prepared. But practicing under exam conditions builds the kind of confidence that keeps you from second-guessing correct answers. Take at least two of these practice exams as if it’s the real thing: timer running, no notes, no looking things up.
