WSET Level 2 Practice Quiz: Wine Regions of France (2026)

Written by Jesse & Cassie, Wine Scribes — Jesse holds a degree in Viticulture & Enology from UC Davis and has made wine in Burgundy, Yarra Valley, California, Washington and the Douro Valley; Cassie holds WSET Level 2 with Distinction and assists Jesse with work in the vineyard and cellar.

France is the center of gravity for WSET Level 2. It takes up more exam real estate than any other country, and with good reason — the French wine map essentially invented the vocabulary the whole world now uses. Jesse spent a harvest season in Burgundy, which gave him a ground-level understanding of how Côte de Nuits differs from Côte de Beaune that no textbook can fully replicate.

This free practice quiz covers the French wine regions in the WSET Level 2 syllabus: Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhône Valley, the Loire Valley, Champagne, Alsace, and the key wines produced in each. Expect questions on appellation names, permitted grape varieties, classification systems, and the styles each region is known for.

France rewards the students who take the time to build a genuine map in their head — not just a list of names. Work through this quiz, identify where your knowledge has gaps, and go back to the source. The regional depth you build here will pay off on exam day.

WSET Level 2 Study Tips: France

France is complex, but it’s learnable. Here’s how to approach it systematically for WSET Level 2:

Start with the big five regions. Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, the Rhône, and the Loire will account for the majority of France-related exam questions. Get these locked in before moving to Alsace and the southern regions.

Learn appellations by grape variety first. Chablis is Chardonnay. Red Burgundy is Pinot Noir. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is Grenache-dominant. Organizing regions around their key grapes makes them stick much more naturally than trying to memorize place names in isolation.

Understand the Bordeaux classification system. The 1855 Classification appears regularly in Level 2 exams. Know the five growth levels and the names of key châteaux in each.

Don’t overlook Champagne production. Méthode traditionnelle, the role of dosage, and the major Champagne house styles often appear as exam questions that many students underestimate.
