WSET Level 2 Practice Quiz: Winemaking & Viticulture

Jesse has made wine in four countries — Burgundy, Oregon, California, and Portugal’s Douro Valley. He’s done punchdowns in ancient stone lagares, sorted Pinot Noir by hand in the Willamette Valley, and managed a barrel cellar through a California heat spike. When you ask him about winemaking for the WSET exam, he’s speaking from direct experience.

This free practice quiz covers the winemaking and viticulture content in the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines syllabus: how grapes are grown, what happens in the winery from crush to bottle, and how those decisions shape the wine’s final style and quality. Expect questions on fermentation, maceration, oak aging, malolactic conversion, vineyard management, and the factors that influence grape ripeness.

These aren’t abstract concepts — they explain the actual flavors in your glass. Understanding them will not only help you pass WSET Level 2, it will fundamentally change how you experience wine. Take the quiz, see where you land, and use our study tips below to dig deeper.

WSET Level 2 Study Tips: Winemaking & Viticulture

Winemaking and viticulture is where real cellar experience helps. Here’s how to approach it for the exam:

Learn the white winemaking process first. White wine production is more straightforward than red — crush, press, ferment, and (sometimes) oak age. Once you have the clean version locked in, learning red winemaking is largely about understanding what maceration adds: color, tannin, and texture.

Understand why decisions are made, not just what they are. The exam often asks why a winemaker might choose to use new oak, or why malolactic conversion is blocked for a certain style. Knowing the reasoning behind each technique is more valuable than memorizing a list of processes.

Climate and viticulture are inseparable. Grape variety selection, training systems, and harvest timing all respond to climate. Connect the vineyard topics back to the regional content you’re studying and the knowledge will consolidate faster.

Sparkling and fortified wines have their own production logic. Méthode traditionnelle and tank method produce different styles for different reasons. Fortification happens at different points for Port versus Sherry, and the exam tests whether you know why.
