WSET Level 2 Practice Quiz: Wine Regions of the World

The WSET Level 2 syllabus takes you on a genuine world tour: from the Old World appellations of France, Spain, and Italy to the New World wine regions of California, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina. By the time you sit your exam, you’ll have a genuinely global framework for understanding wine.

This free practice quiz covers wine regions outside France — the key producing countries and their most important appellations, grape varieties, and wine styles as they appear on the WSET Level 2 exam. Expect questions on Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero, Italy’s Tuscany and Piedmont, Germany’s Mosel and Rhine regions, and the major New World wine zones.

Getting these regions right takes a combination of geography, grape variety knowledge, and an understanding of how climate shapes style. Work through the questions, note any regions where you feel uncertain, and use our study tips below to fill those gaps.

WSET Level 2 Study Tips: World Wine Regions

The sheer breadth of Level 2’s regional content can feel daunting. Here’s how to make it manageable:

Group regions by climate first. Cool-climate regions (Mosel, New Zealand’s Marlborough, Oregon’s Willamette Valley) produce wines with high acidity and restrained fruit. Warm-climate regions (Barossa Valley, Napa, Priorat) produce richer, more powerful wines. Understanding climate logic lets you answer unfamiliar questions by reasoning from principles.

Learn Spain’s appellation hierarchy. Rioja’s classification system — Joven, Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva — is one of the most reliably tested topics in Level 2 exams. Know what each tier means in terms of aging requirements.

Italy is wide, not deep. At Level 2, focus on Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, Prosecco, and Amarone. Quality levels and aging terms (Riserva, Superiore) come up regularly.

New World: know the flagship regions and varieties. For Australia, it’s Barossa Shiraz. For California, it’s Napa Valley Cabernet. For New Zealand, it’s Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. These are the exam touchstones.
