Italy, Spain, and Portugal collectively represent the most complex regional content in the WSET Level 3 syllabus — and some of the most rewarding wine knowledge you’ll ever build. Jesse has made wine in Portugal’s Douro Valley, which gives him a perspective on Portuguese wine that goes well beyond what any textbook covers. When he writes about Touriga Nacional, he’s talking about a grape he’s actually worked with.
This free practice quiz covers the Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese wine regions in the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines: Italy’s key appellations including Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, Amarone, Chianti Classico, Soave, and Prosecco; Spain’s Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Priorat, Rías Baixas, and Cava; and Portugal’s Douro, Dão, Vinho Verde, and Madeira.
These are regions with their own deeply individual logic — you can’t simply apply French wine templates to Italian or Iberian wine. Take this quiz as a test of how well you’ve internalized that individuality.
WSET Level 3 Study Tips: Italy, Spain & Portugal
Southern Europe’s wine regions reward a different kind of study than France. Here’s our approach:
Italy: learn the DOCG system, not every DOC. Prioritize Barolo, Barbaresco, Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, Amarone, and Soave Classico — and understand what makes each one distinctive.
Italy’s indigenous varieties are its identity. Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Corvina, and Glera behave nothing like the international varieties you’ve studied. Learn each one’s character, the climate conditions it needs, and the winemaking approaches that define the top expressions.
Spain: Rioja’s aging system is a reliable exam topic. Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva requirements come up consistently. Know the minimum aging periods for each and understand why they produce such different wine styles.
Portugal: the Douro is more than Port. At Level 3, you need to understand both the dry red wine production in the Douro and the Port production process. Jesse spent a harvest in the Douro Valley and the geography there — the terraced slopes, the schist soils, the extreme temperatures — explains everything about the wines.
