WSET Level 3 Practice Quiz: France – Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhône, Loire & Alsace

France is the most important country on the WSET Level 3 syllabus, and it deserves that weight. It’s where the modern language of fine wine was essentially invented, and where the relationship between place, grape, and winemaking style is most precisely defined. Jesse has harvested Pinot Noir in Burgundy and walked the terraced slopes above the Rhône — perspectives that no textbook can fully replicate.

This free practice quiz covers the major French wine regions in the WSET Level 3 syllabus: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, the Northern and Southern Rhône, the Loire Valley, and Alsace. Expect questions on key appellations, permitted grape varieties, classification systems, production methods, and the factors that distinguish the finest wines in each region.

Level 3 France questions test your ability to connect geography, climate, grape, and style. Work through these questions as if each one is asking you to explain, not just recall — that’s exactly the depth the exam is looking for.

WSET Level 3 Study Tips: France

France at Level 3 rewards depth over breadth. Here’s how to study it well:

Understand the terroir principle from Burgundy out. Burgundy’s Grand Cru, Premier Cru, Village, and Regional hierarchy is the clearest expression of how the French wine system works. Once you understand why one small plot of Côte d’Or earth is classified differently from its neighbor, the logic of appellations across France becomes much clearer.

Bordeaux: left bank vs. right bank. The dominant grape shifts from Cabernet Sauvignon on the left bank (Médoc, Graves) to Merlot on the right bank (Pomerol, St-Émilion). The 1855 Classification and the St-Émilion system are both regularly tested, and they operate very differently.

Northern Rhône is small and important. Syrah is the only permitted red grape in the Northern Rhône appellations. Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie are the prestige names. Understanding the granitic, steep-slope viticulture here explains why these wines age so differently from Southern Rhône blends.

Loire diversity is its defining characteristic. From Muscadet to Vouvray to Sancerre to Chinon, the Loire runs the full spectrum of styles. Study the major appellations by the grape variety that defines them.
