The Business of Wine is often the section WSET Level 3 students underestimate — it’s not as visceral as learning about Barolo or Champagne production, but it makes up a meaningful portion of the exam, and the questions are highly specific.
Jesse and Cassie have been on both sides of the wine business: making wine at a small-batch label (Vespera Cellars), writing about wine for a growing audience of 8,800+ subscribers, and working with importers, distributors, and retailers in the natural course of running a wine publication. The business mechanics covered in this section aren’t theoretical for us.
This free practice quiz covers the business of wine content in the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines: how wine moves from producer to consumer through different distribution channels; the structure of the wholesale and retail trade; the role of wine lists and restaurant service; and the global factors that shape wine pricing, labeling regulations, and market access. Take this quiz as a reality check on the less-glamorous but highly testable side of your Level 3 preparation.
WSET Level 3 Study Tips: Business of Wine
The business section rewards methodical study more than most other Level 3 topics. Here’s how to approach it:
Understand the distribution chain from producer to consumer. Producer → importer/agent → wholesaler/distributor → retailer/restaurant → consumer is the basic structure in most markets. Know who takes margin at each step and why the three-tier system in the US works differently from the UK model.
Learn wine label reading requirements by region. Mandatory versus optional information on wine labels varies significantly between the EU, US, and Australian systems. The exam tests your ability to interpret labels and explain the regulatory logic behind them.
Restaurant wine service and list structure. Questions on wine list design, by-the-glass economics, and preservation systems appear regularly. Think through the business logic: high-margin, lower-cost wines go in the BTG section; collector wines are on the list at a premium.
Global trade and pricing fundamentals. Exchange rates, duty structures, and the economics of transport and storage all affect the retail price of wine. Understand why a wine might cost significantly more at a London restaurant than at the cellar door.
