WSET Level 2 Practice Quiz: Sparkling, Sweet & Fortified Wines

Sparkling, sweet, and fortified wines are where WSET Level 2 starts to get genuinely fascinating — and where a lot of students either pick up easy exam points or leave them on the table. Jesse opened the first bottle of Vintage Port he ever made in the Douro Valley, and Cassie has written about the terroir-driven complexity of Sauternes. These aren’t abstract categories to us.

This free practice quiz covers the sparkling, sweet, and fortified wine content in the WSET Level 2 syllabus. For sparkling wines, you’ll be tested on production methods — méthode traditionnelle, tank method (Charmat), and transfer method — and the regions and styles associated with each. For sweet wines, expect questions on Sauternes, German Spätlese and Auslese, and late-harvest styles. For fortified wines, the focus is on Port, Sherry, and Madeira.

These wine categories are well-defined and highly testable. The students who do best on this section are the ones who understand not just the names, but the production logic behind each style.

WSET Level 2 Study Tips: Sparkling, Sweet & Fortified

This section rewards structured thinking. Here’s how to approach it:

For sparkling wines, focus on production methods and their effects. Méthode traditionnelle produces the autolytic, biscuity character of Champagne. The tank method retains fresh, fruity aromatics — which is why it’s used for Prosecco. These aren’t arbitrary facts; they’re logical relationships between process and style.

Understand the sweetness levels in German wine law. Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, and Trockenbeerenauslese represent increasing levels of ripeness and botrytis concentration. Know the basic progression and the styles it produces.

Port styles are highly testable. Ruby, Tawny, Vintage, LBV, Colheita — know that Vintage Port develops in bottle while Tawny develops in small oak barrels, and you’ll have the core distinction locked.

Sherry is dry more often than you think. Many students go into the exam thinking of Sherry as sweet, but Fino and Manzanilla are bone-dry. Understanding the role of flor yeast is key.
