The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is where every serious wine journey begins. Jesse completed his WSET alongside his viticulture and enology degree at UC Davis, and I (Cassie) passed Level 2 with Distinction — and we both agree that getting the foundational wine types and styles locked in early is the key to everything that follows.
This free practice quiz covers the core wine categories you’ll encounter on your Level 1 exam: still and sparkling wines, red, white, and rosé styles, sweet and fortified wines, and the key serving and storage principles that show up regularly on the test.
Each question reflects the style and difficulty of the actual Level 1 assessment. If you get something wrong, treat it as a gift — it’s telling you exactly where to focus your revision. Work through this quiz, note your weak spots, and retake it until you’re consistently hitting 80% or better.
WSET Level 1 Study Tips
Level 1 is intentionally accessible, but a little focused preparation goes a long way. Here’s what we recommend based on working with hundreds of WSET students:
Know the five core wine styles. The Level 1 syllabus groups wines into still, sparkling, sweet, and fortified categories. For each, be able to describe the style and name two or three examples. That knowledge alone will carry you through a significant portion of the exam.
Learn the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT). Even at Level 1, you’re expected to use structured tasting language. Practice describing wines using appearance, nose, and palate — it’s a habit that will serve you all the way through Level 3.
Understand the basics of food and wine pairing. The Level 1 exam typically includes matching questions — pairing a full-bodied red with a rich meat dish, for example. These are often easy points if you understand the logic rather than just memorizing combinations.
Use wrong answers as your revision checklist. Every question you miss is pointing you somewhere specific. Revisit that topic in your course materials before your next attempt.
