Study Tips for WSET Level 1: How Wine Is Made
The production section of WSET Level 1 is surprisingly logical once you understand a few core concepts. Here’s how we’d approach it:
Start with fermentation. Everything in winemaking flows from one central reaction: yeast converting sugar into alcohol and CO₂. If you understand why fermentation happens and what stops it, you’ll be able to reason through most production questions rather than just guessing.
Learn the red vs. white production split first. The key distinction is skin contact — red wines ferment with their skins (which gives color, tannin, and body), while white wines are typically pressed and fermented without skins. Once that’s clear, rosé becomes easy to understand too.
Fortified wines often trip people up. Remember: fortification means adding grape spirit to stop fermentation early (leaving residual sugar) or after fermentation (producing a dry style). Knowing when the spirit is added determines whether the wine is sweet or dry — that’s a classic exam question.
