How bottling wine works

This week we are bottling a few new released wines. Ever wondered how it all works? Check out our video below. Alexis Pouillon, winemaker and owner of Domaine Pouillon in the Columbia Gorge gives a quick overview of our bottling setup.

How much does bottling wine cost?

Note that this workflow may look entirely different depending on the quantity of wine being bottled. Only 100 cases were being bottled during this filming. If instead, the total bottling amount was over 1,000, there would likely need to be an automated assembly bottling line, either supplied by an outsourced bottling truck company or with the bottling line assembly equipment.

In addition to variable expenses like bottles, corks, caps, gas and pumps, there are larger costs to consider such as a bottling truck company, which can charge upwards of $2.50 per case bottled. If one forgoes the trucking line, then options are manual lines (like in the video below) which carries overhead costs or an automated machine which can cost in the 100’s of thousands, depending on size.
